Dubai Flooding 2022

Relentless Rain Wreaks Havoc in UAE, Oman, Killing 19

Torrential Downpours Cause Flash Flooding, Airport Delays

Dubai Paralyzed as a Year's Worth of Rain Pours in One Day

A relentless deluge of rain battered the United Arab Emirates and Oman this week, causing widespread flooding, disrupting flights, and claiming the lives of at least 19 people in Oman. By the end of Tuesday, more than 142 millimeters (5.59 inches) of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours – an amount that typically takes a whole year to accumulate at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

The torrential rain unleashed immense flash flooding in Dubai, turning roads into rivers and inundating homes and businesses. Shocking videos captured the tarmac at DXB completely submerged, as well as cars struggling to navigate water-logged streets.

The heavy storms also caused flight delays and cancellations at DXB, the world's busiest airport for international travel. Operations were briefly halted as the airport was forced to close runways due to poor visibility and flooding on the tarmac.

The impact of the rainfall extended beyond Dubai, with neighboring emirates and Oman also experiencing severe flooding. In Oman, the death toll from the torrential rain rose to at least 19, with heavy rains continuing to inundate the country.

The relentless rain has overwhelmed infrastructure in the UAE, with localized flooding and power outages reported in many areas. Emergency services have been working tirelessly to assist those affected by the storms, evacuating residents from flooded homes and providing essential supplies.

As the rain continues to lash the region, residents are urged to stay safe, avoid flooded areas, and follow the instructions of local authorities. The UAE National Center of Meteorology has issued heavy rain warnings for parts of the country, urging the public to exercise caution.
