First Nations: Indigenous Peoples of Canada
Defining First Nations
Premières Nations refers to Indigenous peoples in Canada who are distinct from Métis or Inuit. Their identity is rooted in the Constitution Act, Section 35, which recognizes their inherent rights and treaty entitlements.
Assembly of First Nations
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is a significant political organization representing approximately 900,000 First Nations citizens across Canada. The AFN advocates for their rights, interests, and self-governance.
Terminology Changes
Over time, the descriptors "Indian" and "Eskimo" have become outdated and are no longer widely used in Canada. The preferred terms now are First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, reflecting the distinct cultures and identities of each Indigenous group.
