Champions League: Real Madrid overcome Borussia Dortmund to reach final
Vinicius and Benzema strike late to end German side's hopes
Real Madrid reached the Champions League final for the sixth time in eight years thanks to a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final second leg at Signal Iduna Park.
Vinicius Junior gave the Spanish side a 2-3 aggregate lead early in the second half, Vinicius Junior fired past Gregor Kobel after being played in by Karim Benzema.
Real Madrid doubled their lead soon after when Benzema turned in a low cross from Vinicius Junior. With two goals in the final 20 minutes Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the 2024. Borussia Dortmund had their chances in the first half, but they could not find a way past Thibaut Courtois in the Real Madrid goal. Courtois made a great save to deny Jude Bellingham in the first half, and he also kept out a header from Sebastien Haller.
Real Madrid now face Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain in the final, which will be played on June 10 in Istanbul. Having now won two of their last three meetings against Borussia Dortmund, Madrid have also ended their 100% home record in this season's competition.
The high balls in behind the BVB defence are certainly a promising option for Real Madrid who have targeted the space in behind the wing-backs throughout the first half and have found success in doing so.
