A Heartfelt Ceremony for a Beloved Goaltender

Calgary, Alberta - March 23, 2023

The Calgary Flames organization and fans alike gathered at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night to witness the heartfelt retirement ceremony honoring legendary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff.

Kiprusoff, who played 11 seasons with the Flames, established himself as one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. During his tenure in Calgary, he won the Vezina Trophy in 2006, was named to five NHL All-Star teams, and backstopped the Flames to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.

The pre-game ceremony featured speeches from former teammates, coaches, and management, who spoke about Kiprusoff's exceptional skill, unwavering determination, and his impact on the Flames both on and off the ice.

As Kiprusoff's iconic No. 34 was raised to the rafters, the crowd erupted in thunderous applause and chants of "Kipper! Kipper!" The ceremony culminated in an emotional embrace between Kiprusoff and his former coach, Darryl Sutter, a fitting end to a remarkable career that will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy in Calgary.

With his jersey retirement, Kiprusoff joins an exclusive group of Flames legends, including Al MacInnis, Lanny McDonald, and Jarome Iginla, whose numbers have been permanently retired by the club. This honor serves as a testament to Kiprusoff's exceptional contributions to the Calgary Flames and the indelible mark he has made on the hearts of the city's hockey fans.
