7.4 Magnitude Quake Causes Building Damage
Large Number of Aftershocks Reported
A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck eastern Taiwan, causing significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. The quake, which hit at 2:44 am local time on Wednesday, was centered about 60 kilometers south-southwest of Hualien City.
According to the Central Weather Bureau, more than 100 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial earthquake, including several with magnitudes greater than 5.0. The temblor has caused widespread power outages and disrupted transportation in the affected areas.
