Japan Hit by Devastating Earthquake

Magnitude 7.6 Quake Causes Widespread Damage and Casualties

Evacuations Ordered as 245 Deaths Confirmed

On Monday, January 2, 2024, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Japanese seismic scale struck the Noto peninsula in western Japan at around 4:10 pm local time. The quake triggered tsunami warnings and evacuation orders, causing widespread damage and trapping people under collapsed buildings.

As of April 23, 2024, the death toll has risen to 245, with three people still missing. All fatalities occurred in Ishikawa prefecture, while over 1300 injuries have been reported across six prefectures. The earthquake is the deadliest to hit Japan since the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.
