Rangers To Activate Jacob Deгром On Friday
Arlington, Texas Jacob deGrom's return to the New York Rangers rotation has been delayed by an additional week per New York Post. deGrom is considered one of the top pitchers in baseball and missed the first 10 games of the season with a stress reaction in his right scapula.
The 34-year-old threw a simulated game in Arlington and reported no issues. He'll throw a bullpen session early in the week, and if all goes well, he'll be activated from the injured list and will start against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday.
deGrom is 103-52 with a 2.52 ERA and 1,604 strikeouts in 167 starts stretching back to 2014.
A Look At His Injury
deGrom was scratched from his scheduled Opening Day start due to the stress reaction in his right scapula. The injury occurred during a spring training start when deGrom felt discomfort in his shoulder. He underwent an MRI that revealed the stress reaction.
The Rangers initially hoped that deGrom would be able to return to the rotation after a few weeks, but the injury has taken longer to heal than expected. It was an injury that was nagging deGrom since last season and bothered him during the offseason before eventually needing to get an injection.
His Early Success
deGrom is known for his incredible fastball and devastating slider that buckles hitters' knees. deGrom has won two Cy Young Awards and was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2014 and finished runner-up in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 2015 and 2018. He also helped the Rangers win the World Series in 2015.
The Rangers are hoping that deGrom can provide a boost to their rotation, which has struggled in his absence. The Rangers are 13-10 this season but have a team ERA of 4.50, which is 20th in the majors. deGrom will make his first start for the Rangers on Friday at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.
